Social Suicide
is when a person doesn’t fit into that society’s social norms or expectations,
becoming a social outcast, killing their reputation. Social Sacrifice is when
an individual changes who they are with the intent to fit in with a certain
social circle. Everyone goes though the various degrees of social suicide, and
this project will just be based on a combination of my experiences or of the
people close to me (friends and family). I plan to make it mostly from a female
point of view, because it’s something that I am more aware of. I find it very
interesting that every ones perspective of social suicide is always different,
based on that individuals comfort levels in certain environments. I have experienced minor social suicide and
major social sacrifice through the past 8 years.
I would like to
create a piece on how media and social media can be a form of suicide. Facebook
for an example, the basis of the website is profiles of people who judge other
(“Liking”) the more “likes” you get the more popular that person is, which they
may not even exist or that’s not how the person actually is in real life. The
brick being thrown through your window is a metaphor for Facebook, usually
someone throws a brick through your window because you did something bad or
they don’t like, similar to Facebook, they can do and say whatever they want to
you and you cant really do much about it. I would like to portray this through
a collage or sculpture.
Barbie has
always been a iconic figure to represent beauty. Young girls have grown up
playing with Barbie, unconsciously striving to be like her when they are older
(pretty, tall, nice, lots of friends, great boyfriend, etc.). Girls are taught
that Barbie is the ideal woman, what if she has some insecurities of her own? I
would like to portray this through a painting.
